Q&A with MTM President Megan Brown
Megan Brown, ARM, CWCP, CAWC, leads with a passion for protecting workers and empowering manufacturers. She was named MTM President earlier this year after nearly two decades of service to the organization.
MTM has been a trusted partner to Michigan manufacturers since 1976 and has worked closely with MMA since 2018 through the MFG Works Partners Program. Thanks to that partnership, MMA members have saved nearly $1.4 million through an exclusive 3% premium discount.
With Megan Brown at the helm, MTM continues to evolve with the needs of Michigan’s manufacturers — combining personal service, technology and expertise to deliver high-value workers’ compensation coverage and support.
Q: Tell us about your background; how does it uniquely qualify you to lead MTM?
Brown: My career began on the treatment side of the workers’ comp equation — working for a network of occupational health clinics where I promoted corporate safety, health and wellness programs. That hands-on experience helped me as I transitioned to the insurance side, where I continue to advocate for worker health and safety while also helping businesses protect their teams and control their costs.
Q: How does MTM differentiate itself from other workers’ comp insurers?
Brown: MTM is a monoline workers’ compensation carrier, which means it’s our only focus — and we do it exceptionally well. While we leverage modern technology, we never lose the personal touch. For instance, many insurers rely solely on predictive modeling for quoting. At MTM, every application is reviewed by an experienced underwriter to ensure accuracy and fairness.
Our clients also appreciate that when they call us, they speak to someone who knows their account — not a call center. We build real relationships and tailor our service accordingly. And one of the most significant differences is our dividend program. Over the past 11 years, we’ve returned more than $41 million to policyholders — with a recent average dividend of 19 percent of premium paid.
Q: How does MTM balance proactive risk management with competitive pricing?
Brown: MTM provides loss control services to all policyholders — regardless of their premium size. Our experts conduct on-site walkthroughs, offer access to over 730 training videos and provide actionable recommendations after accident investigations. This proactive approach helps reduce claims, improve safety and lower experience modification factors — all of which impact premium. In addition, we routinely analyze our rates to ensure we stay competitive in the marketplace without compromising service or outcomes.
Q: Are there any new initiatives MTM is using to help manufacturers reduce costs?
Brown: Yes — we’ve recently launched a Nurse Triage and Telemedicine program. This gives injured employees immediate access to a medical provider who can assess the situation and determine whether self-care is appropriate or if further care is needed. The program responds to our policyholders asking for return-to-work strategies that allow employees to remain on-site, even while receiving treatment. We can help manufacturers make informed decisions in the critical first moments after an incident — to help the injured get the right care faster when outcomes and costs are most influenced.
We also provide supervisory training that covers the fundamentals of workers’ compensation — like the importance of prompt claim reporting — which can significantly reduce the long-term costs of claims.
